Frankie Perry is Advancing Her Career Graduating with her Second Master’s in Information Sciences
Frankie Perry (’24) enjoys her role in the circulation department of the University of Memphis Ned McWherter Libraries. She has worked for the University of Memphis for over 30 years, spending the last 20 years in the library. However, until recently, she did not have a degree in information sciences.
“I’ve been assisting the librarian instructors and giving faculty and students tours for years not realizing I needed an MSIS degree to teach a research librarian course,” she explained.
After learning about the information sciences master’s program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Perry knew she had to apply.
Perry considers herself an untraditional student. She earned her bachelor’s degree in professional studies in 2007 and her first master’s degree in professional studies in 2009, both from the University of Memphis, with disciplines in paralegal studies, human resource management, and strategic leadership. She also holds a Certificate of Higher Education in Community College Teaching and Leadership from the University of Memphis Graduate School.
Before starting her career at the library, Perry spent 12 years with the United States Army 3291st Reserve School Unit as an enlisted soldier. She also held various positions at the University of Memphis, initially in human resources and later in international MBA studies.
While working in the library’s circulation department, Perry developed a strong interest in teaching a course on librarianship but realized that obtaining her MSIS degree was necessary to do so. She mentioned that UT’s program has been exactly what she needed to balance her work and family responsibilities while pursuing her own goals.
“Because non-traditional students make the conscious decision to attend school after working or raising a family, they understand the importance of their educational experience. The MSIS program has motivated me to achieve my goals, foster family connections, and develop a sense of belonging,” she said.
Perry noted that her family played a significant role in her decision to return to school.
“My family loves me unconditionally, and their support and affection inspired me to know they would make the time and effort to be there for me whenever I needed them. I owe a debt of gratitude to my 28-year-old son, Joseph, for his unwavering support,” she said. “I am thankful that my family is committed to helping me achieve my goals and become the person I want to be, without ever passing judgment on me.”
Perry described her experience with the College of Communication and Information as overwhelmingly positive.
“I appreciate that the School of Information Sciences supports its students, especially non-traditional students like me. The instructors are highly motivating, knowledgeable, and take a hands-on approach to help students succeed in the MSIS program,” she stated.
Perry plans to remain in her current position at the library while hoping to advance with her new degree. She has enjoyed becoming a Volunteer and encourages others, regardless of their age, to prioritize their education.
“I will miss the faculty, students, and the administration team for providing such a rewarding experience,” she added.
