Info Sci Club Provides Hands-on Projects for First-Year Student
School of Information Sciences (SIS) first-year student Kyler Misenheimer is getting involved right away with student organizations at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Misenheimer is from Knoxville and went to Bearden High School where he was part of a program called Virtual Enterprises International (VE). VE provides students skills-based career experiences through hands-on projects and curricula. In VE, Misenheimer was able to create multiple websites for mock companies.
“It was a competition-based program and I did pretty well in it. I liked it, the process of designing the website and then seeing the finished product, and it helped that it was a competition because I’m pretty competitive. I wanted to know how to get into it more in college,” he said.
Misenheimer is studying user experience (UX) design and is a part of the Information Sciences Club. He says the club is a great way to connect with upperclassmen and will provide opportunities for him to work on projects that he can add to his portfolio.
The club is looking for more members to join and Misenheimer said it’s not just for those interested in the field of information sciences.
“Right now, we’re doing a project about music. We’re forming a database of songs and categorizing them based on its intimacy in lyrics and how it transitions from more monogamous lyrics to more maybe Christian lyrics and then to more polyamory,” he said.
Misenheimer is also a part of the UT Rock Climbing Club, which meets twice a week at the Vol Wall. He’s gone on several trips with the group to places including Kentucky and Chattanooga.
Misenheimer says his dream job would be to work for a company that allows him to travel so he can combine his love for design with his love for rock climbing. He says getting involved with student organizations is one of the first steps in making those dreams a reality.
“I think it’s definitely good to get connected with your upperclassman and to know what programs you might be interested in,” he added.
Information Sciences Club meets weekly in the fall and spring semester in the College of Communication and Information Building. To learn more about the club and how to get involved, you can click here.
