SIS Professor Dania Bilal Recognized Among World’s Top Scientists

May 21, 2024 by Kristen Gallant

School of Information Sciences Professor Dania Bilal has been recognized as one of the world’s top 2 percent of scientists based on her number of citations.

Bilal publications focus on children’s information behavior and interaction with technologies.

“Being in the top 2 percent of most-cited scientists worldwide speaks to the impact of my long-term and recent scholarly publications,” she said. “This recognition of the continued value of my research is evident.”

Bilal teaches information science theory.

“I love mentoring students to become independent thinkers, inspiring them to become active in research, and making a difference in their lives,” she explained.

Along with teaching and being heavily active in research, she is a member of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Association of Library and Information Science Education (ALISE).

Bilal co-organized and presented two panels at the 2023 ASIS&T Annual Meeting: The Role of Theory in Information Science Scholarship and Global AI Initiatives: From Theory to Practice.

In 2022, Bilal published a paper in the proceedings of the ASIS&T Annual Meeting titled Theoretical Applications of Children’s and Youth’s Information Behavior Research: 1999-2019. In this study, she examined the nature of theory usage in articles published in fourteen scholarly journals over two decades.

This study was among the top 10 most downloaded papers from the publisher’s website throughout 2023.

Bilal’s current research expands on her 2022 study where she investigated the theories authors of the published articles generated, the methodologies they employed, and the disciplines from which the theories emerged.

“This study fills another gap in children’s and youth’s information behavior research,” she said.

She currently has three journal articles under review.
