McClung Museum
Location Description
The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture is the University of Tennessee (UT) academic museum, located on campus in Knoxville. The McClung Museum serves the university and greater eastern Tennessee community with onsite exhibitions, instruction, public programming, and collections-based research in both natural history and culture. In addition, the Museum provides onsite and offsite instruction for thousands of local K-12 school children each year in collaboration with Knox County and other neighboring school systems. The McClung Museum is one of only two Knoxville museums accredited by AAM (the American Alliance of Museums), and the only natural history museum in the region. The McClung Museum, through its partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), holds one of the largest archaeological collections of Southeastern Native American heritage in the United States.

Student Tasks
We offer several internships in the spring semester. Students are invited to apply for one or more of the positions that best suite their career goals. Availability may vary slightly with each academic calendar but internships most often include: Collection Management in Malacology or Arts & Culture; Exhibition Curation; Museum Education; Visitor Services; Preparator; Design and Marketing; Environmental Archaeology.
For up to date information and the application process, please visit UT's Handshake Portal in October prior to the spring semester in question.
Type of Mentoring Provided to the Student
Successful candidates will have in-depth supervision by a museum staff member in the appropriate field. These primary supervisors will work with the student to choose and execute a real-world project that matches the student's interests and strengths. Additionally, all interns participate in group sessions where they will meet with and learn from each other and other museum professionals from around the Knoxville area.
Student Interaction With Others at the Location
During their internship, students will develop projects that have real world implications. As a result, they will frequently work with museum staff beyond their supervisor. Also, as a part of the group sessions, they will have the opportunity to meet each of the McClung's staff members, are museum professionals, and the other interns, to ask questions and network.
