“Rockvale High School Archival Project Parameter
This project entails archiving objects from the past and present of Rockvale High School. This high school is unique in that it was opened in 1920’s, through WWII, and closed in the 1970’s. It was reopened with us as the newest high school in Rutherford County again at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year. We have kept the connection to the community. The graduates that are still around from the original high school come to games and special events even today. To that end, we have received a lot of memorabilia from families that have been in the community. What we would like to do is preserve and catalog these memorabilia that include video interviews, pictures, trophies, spirit flags, yearbooks, etc. We were hoping to possibly even identify some people in the school pictures as well. All of these treasures have either been donated by individuals, families, or were stored at the Rockvale Community Center.
The next portion of the project would be to set up a system to connect this project of Rockvale’s past with the current school. Our principal, Mr. Luker, wants to add on our current school memorabilia and artifacts from last year’s inaugural reopening class and moving forward. Finally, we’d like to have all these things from Rockvale’s past and present online for the community to see – kind of like a community service. Some of these videos are posted on our website, however, I don’t think they are cataloged anywhere. I might also pull or get access to reopening articles for the current school. There was a lot of publicity about it. This might also entail working with our yearbook sponsor too. We have a student that has done all the video recordings since 2019, who is still attending school and might be a good resource as well. ”
Type of Mentoring Provided to the Student
I will be with the student each step of the way. As needed, I will guide the student in locating, archiving, and cataloging the information. I believe this will be a great learning opportunity for a hands-on learning experience.
Student Interaction With Others at the Location
The student will have access to our administrative staff, namely Principal Steve Luker, as well as the faculty and students. Our hope also is to have some involvement with former students of the first Rockvale High School.
