Working in a small library means you get to do a little bit of everything! We would expect a graduate student intern to supervise the intellectual commons and circulation desk and offer research assistance on Saturdays and one week night; develop web pages, resource guides, and research skills training materials using SpringShare’s LibGuides software; and participate in weekly staff meetings. Practicum student could also choose to participate in collection development, collection management, interlibrary loan, electronic resources management, and instruction activities.
Type of mentoring provided to student
Student will work with library director in a weekly tutorial to gain an overview of all aspects of academic library work. Tutorials will focus on comparing theory to practice and identifying personal preferences and strengths in academic library work. Student will work one-on-one with instruction librarian, collection development librarian, circulation coordinator, and evening supervisor to learn specific skills associated with reference work, collection development, collection management, web page design, and public service.
Level of interaction the student will have with others in the organization
Practicum student will have the unique opportunity to work closely with library staff and librarians for approximately half their hours while working independently on Saturdays for their remaining hours. In addition to working with full time staff, practicum student will work with undergraduate Library Student Assistants. In past practica, students have explored all aspects of academic library work with the library director in a weekly tutorial and also teamed with a librarian to complete collaborative projects.
