This award is to enable students to attend professional information and library science conferences and meetings. Marcellus Turner (’88) is an SIS alumni who established this award specifically for students to have the opportunity to travel to conferences related to information sciences, even if they are not presenting at the conference.
Eligibility: This award is open to all students enrolled in the MSIS program in the UTK School of Information Sciences. A person must be a student at the time of application, but can be a graduate at the time the award is made as long as the travel occurs within two semesters following graduation. For example, if a student graduates in May, the travel needs to occur before the end of the fall semester. Conference attendance should occur between May 1, 2019 and April 30, 2020. A student is only eligible to receive this award once.
Amount: The award amount is $1,000 and will be made to one student.
Application and Selection Procedures: To apply for this award, students should complete the Marcellus Turner Student Travel Scholarship Application. Recipients will be selected by a committee appointed by the SIS Director. This committee shall consist of the SIS Director and two SIS faculty.
Due Date: March 1.
Announcement: The award recipient will be announced on April 1.
The recipient will be expected to work with the SIS Communication Specialist to share their experiences at the conference with the SIS community.
Donor: Marcellus Turner is city librarian at the Seattle Public Library in Washington and he also serves on the CCI Board of Visitors.
