By the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), La SCALA is a partnership with the University of Tennessee’s College of Communication and Information (CCI) and University of Arizona’s School of Information Resources and Library Science (SIRLS).

La SCALA is an acronym for Latino Scholars Cambio Leadership Academy. The goal of La SCALA is to recruit and educate four students of Latino backgrounds who want to further their education by pursuing a doctoral degree (PhD) in Information Science. Each school, the University of Tennessee and the University of Arizona, will admit 2 doctoral students to their programs (for a total of 4 doctoral students). Over the course of four years, each student will work toward earning their doctorate with the ultimate goal of becoming faculty members at institutions across the country and educating the next generation of Library and Information Science professionals.

The universities and their respective programs possess strengths in:

1. STEM Research

2. Faculty Excellence

3. Commitment to Diversity

These strengths, shared by both programs, equip both schools to provide a positive, supportive doctoral education to the La SCALA students.
