October 27, 2021 SLA Guest Speaker: Martha Earl

Join SLA in welcoming guest speaker Martha Earl, who works as an Associate Professor and Director for the Preston Medical Library, on Wednesday, October 27, 4:00 PM ET. She will discuss a history of her career path and how she ended up in her current position. Martha will give an account of her specific research focuses concerning the importance of libraries in relation to healthcare. She will also bring into detail, her numerous publications, presentations, professional teachings, and mentoring interests and how these particular interests are so impactful to the profession of library and information sciences. Learning about the many noteworthy accomplishments Martha has achieved will demonstrate to us her extensive knowledge, commitment, and passion for this field of study.

Martha Earl currently performs duties for the Foundational Curriculum Committee and the IRB for the Preston Medical Library. She received her Bachelors degree and Master of Science in Library and Information Science from the University of Tennessee. Her career began at Meharry Medical College, where she served as a Clinical Medical Librarian and organized information services for the Institute on Healthcare for the Poor and Undeserved. Martha then went on to be the Head of Reference/Associate Professor at East Tennessee State University College of Medicine Library, where she was involved in the Medical Student Education Committee, the Committee on Women and Gender Issues, and outreach to health professionals in rural and undeserved areas. She acted as a chairsperson for the Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Research Committee and the Medical Library Association Books Panel. Martha also earned the title as a Distinguished member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals and won the Distinguished Alumni Award for the UT School of Information Sciences in 2006.
