Biography:

I retired in January 2017 from my position as Science Writer/Editor at the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station (SRS) in Asheville, NC. I started with SRS in 2001 as a technical editor, with the understanding that I would develop a printed research magazine Compass, which we first published in 2005 and continued with quarterly issues (roughly) until 2011. I then developed and wrote for the CompassLive blog, which SRS still uses to convey the results of SRS research to interested audiences at least twice a week. I also served as acting media officer for SRS from 2011 and 2016, the highlight of which was helping to organize a National Association of Science Writers media tour of climate change science in Western North Carolina in 2016.

Before working for the Forest Service, I edited and wrote a research magazine for the UTK Office of Research. In my position as information specialist in that office (1996-2001), I also consulted with faculty on grant proposals, provided grant workshops, provided oversight for the office website, and compiled and published the annual report on research funding.
