Best Project Award Recipients Leah Cannon & Hannah Gunderman

Summarize your paper/project’s goal (two sentences or less):

We created a metadata schema for data management plans (DMP), short documents which outline how data will be organized and protected throughout a research project. The goal for this schema is to provide a consistent way to describe DMPs (especially when stored in repositories) to allow for better access and searchability.

Why/how did you pick your project topic and what did you learn by doing it? (two sentences or less):

We are both passionate about research data management, and we thought it would be a great opportunity to explore this topic through our class project, since metadata and data management principles are strongly connected. We learned so much about the individual elements in DMPs, and how they can be described and summarized.

Talk about your experience working as a group and completing this group project/paper:

We’ve been working together on projects since our time with the DataONE group at UT, and have always collaborated well as a team. Dr. Dobreski’s course was quite challenging but incredibly rewarding, and completing this project allowed both of us to expand our knowledge of DMPs and metadata.

What was your response when you found out you were receiving this award? We were both incredibly excited to hear this news, as we learned so much from this project and it has already led us to some great career advancement opportunities (through conference talks, developing a manuscript, etc.). We’re incredibly grateful that we took this class with Dr. Dobreski, who ignited a passion for metadata within both of us!
