Projecting Student Voice: Advisory Council Established

Everyone’s experience in the MSIS program matters, and student representation and participation in SIS governance are essential to the continual growth and development of the UT School of Information Sciences’ program.  

To further that idea, SIS launched the Director’s MSIS Student Advisory Council (DMSAC) last year as a platform for students to voice their views on initiatives, projects, and programming, and their visions for the future. The DMSAC further ensures that all students are heard and represented, as the SIS student body continues to grow and change 

“One of our top priorities at SIS is to create an environment where students can thrive,” said Director Kelly. “The SIS Director’s Student Advisory Council helps us do this by providing a structure that not only gives students a voice, but also the ability to contribute to the creation of student-focused programming and initiatives.”

The council consists of Director Diane Kelly, Coordinator of Student Services Coordinator Tanya Arnold, and several SIS students, including leaders of the American Library Association/Tennessee Library Association (ALA/TLA) Student Chapter, Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) Student ChapterSIS members of the CCI Dean’s Graduate Student Advisory Council (DGSAC), and Special Libraries Association (SLA) Student ChapterThe council consists of a mix of distance education and on-campus students, as well as students who are at different points in the program. 

“I believe that every student should have the chance to be heard on different aspects,” said Hannah Brandon, SIS Student and a member of the DGSAC. “Their input can help the professors, the facility, and administrators make the program the best that it can be. Students’ input can also help improve their experience in the program and the experience of future students.”
